Laptop insurance in South Africa — what cover costs and what to ask

A practical 2026 guide to laptop insurance in South Africa: pricing, theft and damage cover, and how to insure a work-from-home setup.

A modern Dell XPS, HP Spectre or Lenovo ThinkPad lands between R20 000 and R45 000 in South Africa, and a gaming laptop can easily exceed R60 000. If your laptop is your livelihood — or your studies — standalone laptop insurance is one of the highest-ROI policies you can buy. Here's how it works in 2026.

Why household contents cover usually isn't enough

Most SA household insurance policies do cover laptops, but with two big caveats: they're typically only covered inside the home unless you specifically add all-risks cover for portable items, and the single-item limit may be lower than the laptop's replacement value. If you regularly take your laptop to coffee shops, the office or on flights, standalone or all-risks cover is non-negotiable.

Frequently asked questions

Is my laptop covered on my home insurance?+

Usually only inside the home. To cover it at the office, on a flight or in a coffee shop, you need an all-risks or standalone laptop policy.

Are laptops covered in stolen vehicles?+

Yes, if your policy includes theft from a locked vehicle and the laptop was out of plain sight. Theft from an unlocked car is excluded by almost every insurer.
