Most SA phone insurance claims that get rejected are rejected for procedural reasons — not because the insurer is being difficult. Doing the right things in the right order in the first 48 hours dramatically increases the odds of a clean settlement. This is the playbook.

Theft claim — the first 24 hours

  • Within 1 hour: blacklist the IMEI with your network (Vodacom 082 1944, MTN 083 1808, Cell C 084 140, Telkom 081 180)
  • Within 24 hours: open a SAPS case and get a CAS number — required by every insurer
  • Within 24 hours: notify your insurer (most have an online claim portal or WhatsApp line)
  • Same day: change your iCloud / Google account password and remove the device

Theft claim — documents to upload

  • Proof of purchase or recent valuation
  • SAPS case number and station name
  • Blacklist confirmation from your network (SMS or email)
  • Sworn affidavit describing what happened (insurer will provide template)
  • Copy of your ID

Damage claim — the right way

For accidental damage, do not get the phone repaired before submitting the claim. Most insurers require their nominated repairer to assess the device first, and a third-party repair voids the claim. Photograph the damage in good light, including a clear shot of the IMEI sticker if the phone won't power on.

Top reasons SA claims get rejected

  • Late IMEI blacklisting (more than 24 hours after theft)
  • No SAPS case number, or a case opened more than 48 hours late
  • Inconsistent statement between the SAPS affidavit and the insurer's claim form
  • Device was repaired by a third party before assessment
  • Premium was in arrears at the time of the incident
