An iPhone 16 Pro Max retails for north of R36 000 in South Africa, and a single screen replacement at an authorised repairer is over R8 000. Whether you buy a standalone policy, add AppleCare+, or rely on your bank's device cover, the right choice depends on which iPhone you own and how you use it. Here's how the options compare in 2026.

iPhone insurance pricing by model (2026)

  • iPhone 16 Pro Max (R36 999): R185–R420/month
  • iPhone 16 Pro (R29 999): R150–R340/month
  • iPhone 16 (R22 999): R115–R260/month
  • iPhone 15 Pro (R26 999): R135–R305/month
  • iPhone 14 (R17 999): R90–R205/month
  • iPhone 13 (R12 999): R65–R150/month
  • iPhone SE 3rd gen (R8 999): R45–R105/month

AppleCare+ in South Africa: the honest verdict

AppleCare+ is now available with the South African Apple Store. It covers two incidents of accidental damage per year with capped excess (currently R699 for screen-only, R1 999 for other damage) and extends warranty coverage. What it does not cover is theft — and theft is the dominant SA risk. AppleCare+ pairs well with a theft-only local policy, but on its own it leaves the biggest hole in your cover wide open.

Standalone iPhone cover from SA insurers

Local specialists (Pineapple, Naked, King Price, MiWay, Outsurance) all underwrite iPhones at competitive rates because they're a known-quantity device with predictable repair costs. Three things to compare:

  • Replacement type — new iPhone, refurbished, or cash settlement?
  • Excess structure — fixed rand amount vs percentage of claim
  • Battery cover — most policies exclude battery degradation as a normal wear-and-tear item

Things that void iPhone cover

  • Unauthorised repairs (third-party screen, battery or back-glass replacement)
  • Jailbreaking
  • Late IMEI blacklisting after theft
  • Liquid damage where Apple's internal liquid-contact indicator is triggered without an insured incident on file

Frequently asked questions

Is AppleCare+ enough on its own in South Africa?+

Not really — AppleCare+ doesn't cover theft, which is the dominant risk for SA iPhone owners. Pair it with a local theft-only policy or use a full SA insurer instead.

Can I insure an iPhone bought overseas?+

Yes, most SA insurers cover grey imports if you can show the original purchase invoice and the device has a valid IMEI registered with ICASA.
